Traditional coffee pods have an environmental impact far greater than their size. 62 billion pods are used annually in North America and Europe, and yet only 27% are recycled. The amount of coffee pods currently landfilled in a year is enough to circle the globe more than 12 times.
The main reason traditional pods create so much waste is because of their packaging. These pods are typically made from plastic or aluminum, and both options have limited recycling options available. Traditional pods are not 100% recyclable either–the used coffee grounds and lids almost always have to be removed before recycling the cup. The extra effort needed for consumers results in even lower recycling rates.
Why use Compostable Pods?
Compostable pods address the issues of traditional pods: simpler disposal, eco-friendly packaging and overall healthier impact. Metropolis capsule pods are CMA and BPI-certified compostable.
Compostable pods are simpler than traditional as well: no need to remove coffee grounds or excess liquid, or make sure to peel off the lid. These cups are designed to reduce effort that goes into disposal, making it easier for you to just toss in your compost bucket and go. Once the pods have been composted with WasteNot, they will break down into a natural compost along with everything else in your bucket.
